YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards

Last week I went to one of my favourite events of the year - the YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards. This annual event honours 7 extraordinary women who are improving the lives of women and girls and driving long-term change across Toronto, Canada, and the globe.

It was an amazing night full of celebration and inspiration, and it left me feeling so very hopeful. You can read more about the awards here, and more about the winners here.

Part of the reason I write here every month is to highlight organizations that are doing amazing work, and give them the attention they deserve. The YWCA is definitely an organization that is worth bringing some attention to.

In their own words: "YWCA Toronto is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. We help women and girls flee violence, secure housing, find jobs, establish their voices, enhance skills and develop confidence. We offer a range of housing options, employment and training programs, community support programs, girls' programs and family programs; we also engage in systemic advocacy."

Most people think of "The Y", when they hear YWCA or YMCA. They tend to think of the community pool, or the local gym. But this organization is doing so much more than just providing community centers. They are working tirelessly to build long term systemic change. They are working to make lives better for marginalized people across Toronto and the world.

A huge thanks to the YWCA for hosting an amazing fundraiser and awards night - and for reminding me of all the great work being done in Toronto!
